XP boots only to a Documents folder
Monday, September 21, 2009
Problem: XP boots up only to a documents folder. Placing explorer.exe in the folder and running it allows the machine to boot completely into Windows.
Cause: This is usually due to something being run along with explorer.exe in the registry. On the last machine we worked on, the registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon
was not only bringing up explorer, it was also calling CSRRS.EXE. This was due to an infection by W32.Gaobot.AO, which is a worm.
Solution: Malwarebytes may remove this. There is also a removal tool my Symantec. If all else fails check reports of this via Google or get the machine serviced.

Solution: Unable to install Malwarebytes

Problem: Your computer is infected and you are unable to install Malwarebytes.
Solution: Rename MBAM-setup.exe to anything else, eg: absolute.exe.
Some malware programs block MBAM, making it harder for you to remove them. Once you have Malwarebytes installed you can attempt to remove the malware.
