Dell XPS M1730 Power Jack Problem

We have been seeing a few M1730 gaming laptops come in with broken power jacks. As of October 2009, the jacks are not available anywhere. This is one of the very few jacks we can not get our hands on. Of course, we have a repair solution. We’re not extremely happy with it but we can make the machine work again. We use a similar, smaller jack, and convert the PA19 AC adapter to fit the new, smaller jack. We aren’t excited about it as the smaller jack will be easy to break. The adapter is very large and if the weight of the adapter pulls on the jack too many times it will break. Most of our power jack repairs leave the jack better than new. But not this one. The good news is we can rescue the $2,000 machines using our standard jack repair service. To get the correct jack we must buy another motherboard from Dell and they are $700 - $900 depending on which rep answers the phone. At this time our jack repairs are $149.

DELL Closes NC plant & Eliminates 905 Jobs

As we mentioned last year on our blog, Dell is closing factories. They do not manufacture most of their own computers so there is no need for factories.

Against many taxpayer's wishes, the North Carolina General Assembly gave Dell over $240,000,000.00 in tax breaks to open up the Winston-Salem plant less than 4yrs ago.

Updated: New Laptops page

Just a note- we updated our New Laptops page. It now reflects that we carry Toshiba and Dell laptops.

We're going to try to keep the Toshiba S300 laptops in stock, as they seem to be in demand at the moment.

Dell M1710 Video Card Problems, M1730 Upgrade

Well it is hard to believe but Dell has made yet another laptop with no video cards available. The cards run very hot and break. Most of the failures we have seen have been in the 512MB Nvidia Geforce 7900 GTX cards, Dell P/N: YF227.

For the units out of warranty we can get the cards however they're around $700.

For the units in warranty Dell is giving away a free upgrade. We had a M1710 in recently that we handled the warranty for and Dell upgraded the customer to a M1730 (pictured above). The M1730 was alright- it had Vista Ultimate and 4GB RAM.

Dell Laptops are back in stock

We finally got some Dell Vostro laptops in stock to sell again.

We struggled since June 2008 to get new laptops in. Every order we placed was mysteriously canceled. Sales representatives and resolution specialists were unable to help.

Finally, in November, Dell sent us what we paid for.

Right now we just have some Vostro 1000 units in stock.

We also have our normal used Dell laptops in stock, including:
Latitude D600
Inspiron 700m
XPS M140
Inspiron 1100

Battery Recall 2008

Yes, it is yet another battery recall, not to be confused with the first recall.

We'll call this recall "Battery Recall 2008".

Affected models:

HP/Compaq:
HP Pavillion DV1000, DV8000, ZD8000
Compaq Presario V2000 and V2400
HP Compaq: NC6110, NC6120, NC6140, NC6220, NC6230, NX4800, NX4820, NX6110, NX6120, NX9600

DELL:
Latitude: 110L
Inspiron: 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, 5160

Toshiba:
Satellite: A70/A75, P30, P35, M30X, M35X, M50/M55
Tecra: A3, A5, S2

Note: The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists the Toshiba models as P30/P5 but we believe this is a misprint and should read P30, P35 as we have printed above. The Toshiba site verifies our correction as well.

Note #2: Some models are just bad models. Eg: The 5150 has been subject to all kinds of problems, recalls, lawsuits. Same with the Toshiba M35x. And the Compaq V2000 is now part of the Nvidia recall which we'll be covering shortly..

Is Dell leaving North Carolina?

A couple years ago the North Carolina General Assembly gave Dell around $280,000,000.00 in tax incentives to open a plant here in North Carolina and create some jobs. Some people were furious and lawsuits started, trying to stop the taxpayer's hard earned money from being thrown out the window. Dell was still given the incentives anyways, contingent on the factory meeting certain employment and local-investment goals by 2015.

But now the factory may close. Dell sells a lot of computers but may sell many/all of it's factories in n attempt to improve profitability. They're selling more laptops than desktops now and the laptops aren't manufactured at Dell's factories.

So, is Dell leaving North Carolina? Will the Winston-Salem factory close? And what will happen if/when it does?

We'll see...

Dell Registered Partner AbsoluteRaleigh.com

Dell has updated it's reseller program and we can now announce that we are a Dell Registered Partner. We'll primarily carry notebooks; we'll start with some Vostro machines.

Simply due to our cost being nearly the same as yours, they'll likely be cheaper to buy directly from the manufacturer and we will attempt to add some value. This will be some added memory and the convenience of being able to buy it right away. Many people have to wait two weeks (or longer) for the manufacturer to get a machine built and shipped.

Dell 6000, 6400 & E1505 laptops with No Display

We have seen a surge of Dell 6000, 6400, E1505 and other laptops coming in for repair with no display. The display suddenly goes dark and nothing can be seen on the screen. Or, the LCD is very dim, making text and images barely visible.

The display can not be seen due to any of a few different problems. But, lately we have had several come in with a bad backlight. Most of these laptops require our backlight repair.

For more information on backlight technology please visit our backlight repair FAQ. For more infomation on other Dell 6000 problems visit our Inspiron repair page .
