MacBook Air Hinge Defect?
Thursday, February 26, 2009
Over on Engadget's site here, it is reported that more than one customer has broken hinges on their MacBook Air. The article reads "the hinge becomes loose over time, then suddenly catches and cracks from normal use". Apple is currently not covering the issue under warranty.
Some models, such as HP's DV9000, have hinge defects (which are "known problems"), which are covered by a special warranty enhancement, even for machines out of warranty.
At the moment we're not sure how many MacBook Air laptops are affected.

Count me in as one of those affected by the defective hinge. Apple has been very uncooperative about this matter saying it was my fault it happened. Complete BS, when you have 1000s of people reporting this same matter.

Same problem for me.
The lab retained the machine for "up to 7 business days" which turned to be 5. The whole screen ($500 worth)has been replaced under warranty.
What concerns me, though, is that instead of replacing the hinge sleeve (probably $1 worth) they had to replace the whole screen. - At 7:27 AM, AbsoluteRaleigh said...

Most of the hinges we buy here cost under $10. Some rare models, tablets and advanced laptops need a $50 hinges.

Right now there is also an HP, a Lenovo and multiple Dells with hinges breaking very early.
ThinkPad has been, and is still out favorite laptop. They won't shaft you when you need to buy hinges in the rare event you damage yours, which takes a lot of effort.
