TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2002

The Toshiba SD-R2002 is a DVD-ROM / CD-RW drive that is used in many laptops including IBM & Compaq.

It shows up in device manager as a DVD-ROM drive. Sometimes users think it is just a DVD-ROM but it is really a DVD-ROM / CD-RW.

Most any CDRW software, inlcuding Nero, will record CDs using this drive. Most any DVD player, including Power DVD, will play DVDs using the SD-R2002.

I have the Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2002 in my Compaq however, it only played DVDs for about a year after I purchased the laptop (when I upgraded to XP). Now even though my computer sees the hardware as DVD/CD-RW properly it only plays and burns CDs and does not recognize that it has a DVD in it. No one has ever been able to help me figure out the problem (including Compaq... go figure) and every software "solution" I've tried including Codecs has failed to get my computer to interface with DVDs.

I have the same problem with an HP Omnibook XE3, upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional.

No help anywhere. With 2 Million copies of SD R-2002 sold, one might think that Toshiba would accomodate users with a patch or software update to correct this problem.

Bult-in obsolescence?
