Sony Vaio PCG-GRV670: Shut down problem

A Sony Vaio PCG-GRV670 passed through here this week. It was shutting down unexpectedly. There are various shut down problems associated with the PCG series. We get in quite a few GRV670 & GRV680 laptops.

This one was filled with dust. Dust was clogging the exhaust vents. The fans were not clogged but were very dusty. A can of air will not fix this. The laptop must come apart. Usually when the CPU fan is removed there are layers of dust between the fan and the exhaust fins which can not be seen from the outside of the laptop. Depending on model, sometimes the LCD needs to be removed in order to thoroughly clean out the system.

  • I'm currently repairing a Vaio PCG-grs700. It is shutting down for no apparent reason. What are some of the other causes other than dirt and dust. I disassembled the machine and found very little dust.
