No jail for virus writer

July 8, 2005, Verden, Germany, The teen creator of the Sasser internet worm, Sven Jaschan, gets community service.

The Sasser worm supposedly caused "millions of dollars in damage worldwide." Supposedly he avoided jail due to being caught just before his 18th B'day and also because he "acted out of a need for recognition" and not for commercial purposes.

This is also a historical event due to Microsoft's reward/bounty- the first one paid out. MS rewarded $250,000 to be split between two people who had helped identify Jaschan.

Do viruses and worms really cost us millions of dollars? Some people say yes, some say no. They have never costed me a penny. The way I see it, good and bad programs must both exist in order for technology to advance the way that it does.

There will always be people saying that a virus has ruined their life or cost them millions of dollars and that the person that wrote the virus should be thrown in jail. And I understand where they are coming from, but, they also need to understand where the virus writers are coming from. You have to look at the whole picture and both points of view.

All in all if a security hole is there it is better to find out sooner than later. It allows for better, more secure, more advanced programs.

Well since this is primarilry a laptop repair blog I will end this rant rather than keep going. Must got back to work. =)
