HP ZE1210 - broken power jack & more
An HP ZE1210 laptop came in for repair last week which is being wrapped up right now. This one was in rough shape.
The power jack was broken and the unit would shut off every 7-10 minutes. Our customer was still using it until finally there was no display.
We were able to solder on a new DC jack. The unit was shutting off due to overheating- the exhaust vents and CPU heatsink fins were clogged with dust, trapping in the hot air generated by the CPU. As for the LCD not turning on, the unit needed a new LCD inverter.
One more Hewlett Packard ready to go again.

I have a 1210 with a weak power jack. And the laptop base runs hot.
I have cleaned the air vents. I'm using a 75 watt power supply to line voltage.
Are the fans supposed to run a) now and then especially when it gets warm, b) always, or c) almost never, until it gets real hot?
Mine fans do come on and off seemingly by thermostat, but is that what it is supposed to do? Or are they not coming on enough or often enough to do the cooling job.
When it does get too hot it just turns off. No fanfare no warning. Then windows has to come up again as after a crash. 'Checks the hd clusters, etc. Sometimes it's still too hot and the C:\ drive is not recognized. By waiting to cool down, all is well again until next time.
Does all this seem right? Or can this be repaired.
Thanks for your advice.

Hello,
The power jack repairs are currently a lat rate of $149. Wile we are in the laptop we thoroughly clean the fans and cooling system.
As for your fans, they are going to run once the processor gets to a certain temperature.
It is normal for that particular machine to shut off when it gets too hot. But note, it should not be getting to that temperature- it will not last much longer running that hot, so I would get it serviced here if you plan on eping it around much longer. =)
